A CLEAR VISION FOR PRINCE WILLIAM
Born to immigrants, Dr. Babur Lateef grew up in Youngstown Ohio and moved to Prince William County in 2002. Babur’s father was a professor at Youngstown State University where Babur spent a good deal of his childhood. Educational achievement and advocacy are the cornerstone values of the Lateef family. Babur knew from a very young age that he wanted to be an eye doctor. He achieved this dream as the product of public schools, from grade school to medical school. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Youngstown State University and his MD from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
Babur's wife, Tarannum, is a Pediatric Neurologist and served on the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) Reform and Innovation Committee. They have both been fierce advocates for Public Education for decades in their community.
Babur serves on the University of Virginia Board of Visitors and SPARK Foundation Board; is an active member of all of his children's PTOs; and was selected for Governor Ralph Northam’s Transition Team. Babur also runs a successful ophthalmology practice in Prince William County, with locations in Manassas and Woodbridge. He is regularly listed as one of the Washingtonian Magazine’s Top Doctors in eye surgery.
Babur ran against Corey Stewart for Chair of Board of County Supervisors in 2011. Even though he lost that race, it didn’t discourage him from staying involved and continuing to fight for Prince William County Schools. The 2011 campaign focused heavily on education, which prepared Babur to take on the role of Interim School Board Chairman.
As a physician, Babur cares for children and adults across the county. He has been an advocate for the blind and visually impaired. His commitment to public service extends to service in the Prince William Area Free Clinic and the Greater Prince William Community Health Center.
His commitment to public service has given him important insight into the challenges facing our school system. Babur and his wife have four children in the Prince William County School System. Babur is determined to make sure Prince William County Public Schools keep their promise of a “World Class Education” for every single child in our community.
